Now, I wouldn't describe myself as a huge Dali fan, I find his paintings contrived and somewhat wearisome, but the current exhibition of woodblock prints from Salvador's visual interpretation of Dante Alighieri's The divine Comedy, currently on show at Eames Fine Art, is truly beautiful.
Dali was commissioned by the Italian government to illustrate this epic poem in 1950, but being such a controversial choice, the commission was receded and Dali decided to continue with project himself with the help of French publisher, Joseph Foret.
The result was 100 watercolours that were then meticulously translated into 3,500 engraved wood blocks, all under Dari's supervision. The result is a series of images with an extraordinary lightness of touch with washes of sometimes sublime colour and sometimes hues of deep or bright intensity.
A divine exhibition.
